Child Protection

Safeguarding Policy

James Music Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all students, with particular emphasis on the protection of children and vulnerable adults.

Our Commitment to Safeguarding

At James Music Academy, safeguarding is our highest priority. We believe that every student has the right to learn in a safe, supportive environment free from harm, abuse, or neglect. This policy outlines our commitment to protecting all students, particularly those under 18 years of age.

We adhere to the guidance provided by the NSPCC for private tutors and follow best practices established by the Department for Education. Our safeguarding procedures are designed to identify concerns early and respond appropriately to protect students from harm.

  • We prioritise the welfare and safety of all students above all other considerations
  • We maintain clear professional boundaries at all times
  • We create an environment where students feel comfortable raising concerns
  • We respond promptly and appropriately to any safeguarding concerns

Enhanced DBS Check

James holds an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate, which includes checks against the children's barred list. This is the highest level of criminal record check available in the UK and is required for individuals working directly with children and vulnerable adults.

Working with Young People

We welcome students of all ages to James Music Academy. When working with students under the age of 18, we implement additional safeguards to ensure their protection:

  • Parental consent is mandatory - No lessons will be conducted with a minor without verified parental or guardian consent
  • Age verification - Date of birth is collected during registration to ensure appropriate safeguards are applied
  • Communication transparency - Parents and guardians have visibility of lesson schedules and can access progress updates
  • Clear boundaries - All communication with minors is conducted professionally and appropriately
  • Online safety - For remote lessons, we follow best practices for online safeguarding including secure video platforms and appropriate session recording policies

Parental Consent Requirements

For students under 18 years of age, parental or guardian consent is a mandatory requirement before any lessons can take place. Our consent process includes:

  • Verified consent - Parents or guardians must verify their identity and provide explicit consent for their child to participate
  • Full disclosure - Parents are provided with complete information about the lessons, including format, duration, and content
  • Policy acknowledgment - Parents must acknowledge they have read and understood our safeguarding and privacy policies
  • Consent records - All consent records are maintained securely for a minimum of 7 years in accordance with UK child data protection requirements
  • Parent accounts - Parents can create their own account to monitor their child's progress and manage consent

A student's account will remain in a pending state until parental consent has been verified. During this time, the student may browse the platform but will be unable to book or attend lessons.

Online Safety Measures

Many of our lessons take place online. We implement robust online safety measures to protect all students:

  • Secure platforms - We use industry-standard, encrypted video conferencing platforms for all online lessons
  • Private sessions - Lesson links are unique and shared only with the enrolled student and, where applicable, their parent or guardian
  • Recording policy - Sessions are not recorded by default. Any recording for educational purposes requires explicit consent from all parties, including parents for minors
  • Data protection - All personal data is handled in accordance with UK GDPR and the ICO Children's Code. See our Privacy Policy for details
  • Clear communication - Parents of minors receive confirmation of lesson times and have access to session information
